Congratulations to the Mid-Atlantic region on a great national symposium celebrating our 50th anniversary! I hope everyone who attended had a wonderful time. If you couldn’t make it this year, keep an eye out for “As Seen at Symposium” webinars through the Conversations on Dress series over the coming year. You can also peruse the abstract by downloading the proceedings from the members-only website and visiting the Exclusive Videos page there, too, where we will be uploading recorded versions of some of the plenary sessions. We hope to see you all in person at our next symposium in Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University.
This year, our town hall brought forth questions about the logistics of how the symposium operates and the upcoming symposium on campus at LMU to make the symposium more cost-effective. We had a good conversation about diversity, leadership, and the rubrics used to review abstracts. As a result of this discussion, a task force is being assembled to review the DEAB language in symposium rubrics before the next call for abstracts is released this summer.
Also at the symposium, Howard Vincent Kurtz, the co-chair of the 50th Anniversary Campaign Committee, announced that we have exceeded our goal of $50,000! These endowment funds will be invested, and the interest and dividends will be used to partially fund paid staff positions, which adds to the stability of our organization going forward for the next 50 years! I plan to look for ways to fund-raise and raise our profile as an organization to the benefit of our members.
As always, feel free to reach out to me personally. I look forward to serving you for the next two years.
Sincerely,
Leon Wiebers, President, Costume Society of America
