The roles of the Vice President for External Relations include raising the profile and credibility of the field of costume by encouraging networking with other people and organizations having costume interests, by publicizing the work of CSA members and by developing business memberships and partnerships.
Deborah Miller is an independent appraiser of historic, vintage and contemporary clothing, accessories and textiles throughout North America. She is an Accredited Senior Appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers with a designation in costume & couture. Ms. Miller is an IRS Qualified Appraiser, and all appraisals are compliant with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). Since 2009, she has been a regular textile and costume appraisal specialist on WGBH’s Antiques Roadshow. Within textiles, clothing and accessories she has a special expertise in 20th and 21st c. fashion, difficult to appraise one-off and unique properties including those with celebrity association, haute couture, designer archives, very large collections and rare textiles. Ms. Miller has appraised the personal archive of Charles James, America’s first couturier, as well as the personal collection of Virgil Abloh, the late artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear and the high-end streetwear label, Off-White. Deborah Miller received a BA from Hamilton College, her MA from the Bard Graduate Center in NYC, and her Appraisal Certificate from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
