CSA Mary D. Doering Guardian Honor
This honor recognizes the legacy of Mary Doering and others like her who recognize the values of artistic, historical, and socially significant objects of dress and appearance. These artifact guardians take on the charge of giving extant objects special care and consideration, and work to preserve them.
The honor, to be given every two years, is named in honor of the inaugural recipient, costume historian Mary Doering, who spent forty years collecting clothing from the 18th through 20th century. In the process, she shared this important and extensive collection with students, researchers, historic interpreters, and museums of all sizes. Mary has been a curator, a teacher of graduate students, a curator of exhibits at numerous historic houses and museums, and a lender to several exhibitions. She joined CSA in 1974, was the initial curator of the American Red Cross’s archive of uniforms, and catalogued the DAR’s collection in anticipation of the Bicentennial celebrations in 1976. In addition to the classes she has taught for the MA in Decorative Arts and Design History at the Smithsonian, she has lectured on a wide range of costume history topics for museums, historic houses and organizations.
